Yuletide 2015 Letter

Dear Yuletide author,

I already know that you are kind and talented and that you have such amazing taste because you like great things, so good job on all of those things! Thanks for taking the time to read my additional information, which I promise to keep concise and coherent. (P.S. I lied.)

First off, thank you for writing for me. Know that it is much appreciated and, I know everyone says this but in this case it’s also true, that I will almost certainly end up pleased as punch by and grateful for anything you come up with, provided you try to avoid my explicit dislikes. I’m not very particular about setting or specific prompts or even rating, but I’ll try to provide some not outlandish suggestions below.

Likes: day-in-the-life stuff, missing scenes, UST, UST, and did I mention UST? UST that gets resolved is always best so that everyone who got all worked up (characters and me) get to B-) a bit in the end. Also, characters with flat affect or who present really sardonically but are all soft inside, grumpy protags, especially if the other one isn’t…you know, basically some dynamics so that they actually resemble the canon characters a bit. Realistic dialogue that’s also germane to the fandom always works on me, particularly if it’s funny or a bit devastating. I’m a big fan of humour in fic, but don’t force it if you don’t feel comfortable or it doesn’t fit whatever you’ve thought up.

I have a bit of a thing for (face)shaving and care way too much about armpit hair. Dub con is okay with the caveat that it must only be dubious because they are unsure if the other person’s into it at first, but guess what, of course they are. A character can start out desperately uncertain and then gain confidence as the con gets less dub. If that doesn’t make sense and it may well not, feel free to anon me. As to rating, G to NC-17 are all good, but with the exception of Jamie in The Thick of It, I do ship these people, so I would prefer for them to be, you know, together. It doesn’t have to be explicit, hints or implications are fine. If you want to write me domestic gen stuff, I’ll be very happy. If you want to pen a filthy, sprawling pornographic saga with long passages (ahem) celebrating someone’s butt, I will also be very happy. I’m keen on plot, so please include a bit. Canon divergence (what could have been/what will be) is all well and good, but maybe not massive AU departures (space, high school, Greek mythology, etc.)

Dislikes: For these particular fandoms, I’d like to ask for no kink (a/b/o, knotting, vore, mpreg, necrophilia, etc.) except for what I’ve indicated above. Please no non con or under-16 sex. Otherwise, there are some things that I’m genuinely afraid of, like plane crashes and cockroaches, that I’d rather were not described in detail. Because it’s Yuletide and the characters in these fandoms are all a bit stupid sometimes and seem to relish my tears, please avoid crushing my spirit further with any irredeemable loss or major character death (excluding canon, obvi). I’m fine with being sad, it’s part of why I love books and art and television and these particular people, but I would just beg for a light at the end of the tunnel if you decide to go that route. And last thing, please don’t disparage or bash any of the characters’ canon love interests if they’re in the way of the story you want to tell. Best leave them out entirely in that case. I promise I won’t complain.

A Single Man (2009) - George Falconer/Jim

Remember when everyone in this was alive and beautiful and lit worshipfully by Tom Ford so that love looked like the lazy, golden afternoon of a lifetime and your heart was just brimming full with ease? That, I want THAT. Some leads, if you require them: whatever it is that prompts George to say they’re invisible, lying out on the rocks telling each other life-long secrets in sun-bleached black and white, Jim calling George “old man” for the first time, how they knew when they first found each other…I have nothing but time for them. I just want them to be happy.

Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy (2011) - Jim Prideaux/Bill Haydon

Jim Prideaux and Bill Haydon - together, of course. The inseparables.

There’s clearly a Boeing’s worth of baggage between these two and I for one want to know all about it. The obvious place to start is the muddy, happy rugby pics that seem to stab everyone who beholds them right in the feels, but there’s a lot more besides: the Christmas party (godDAMN but I care about that Christmas party), Bill using his traitorous influence to free Jim, etc. Did they meet at all while Jim was in hot, broody exile in the caravan? (Imagine THAT was your gym teacher???) What is Jim remembering when he takes aim and sheds a tear? And Bill, when he’s staring down the barrel of his best friend’s rifle? Bring the books into it or not, I don't care. Tear me apart, dear author, I am yours!

The Thick of It (TV) - Jamie McDonald

Destroyer of fax machines, defender of Al Jolson, Jamie McDonald ensnared me by being mean and weird and I missed him every second after he inexplicably disappeared from the In the Loop/The Thick of It universe. Yes, he is abusive and violent and crude, but I have a thing for monsters who are faultlessly polite to the cleaning staff. We get a tiny, sobering peeks into Malcolm’s life, but Jamie is a mystery. Where did Malcolm find him and what was he doing at the time? Where did he go after the Specials and why? What does he go home to at night? I didn’t specify any other characters because I wanted you, sage and talented author, to do whatever struck your foul-mouthed fancy, but obviously his relationship with Malcolm is complex and important, and I’m in love with their changeable master/attack-dog dynamic. I don’t ship them, but whatever, if you can pull it off and not gross me out, go for it.

Thank you and happy Yuletide!

Also, characters with flat affect or who present really sardonically but are all soft inside, grumpy protags, especially if the other one isn’t…you know, basically some dynamics so that they actually resemble the canon characters a bit. A character can start out desperately uncertain and then gain confidence as the con gets less dub. If that doesn’t make sense and it may well not, feel free to anon me. As to rating, G to NC-17 are all good, but with the exception of Nicola Samorì’s art, I do ship these people, so I would prefer for them to be, you know, together. It doesn’t have to be explicit, hints or implications are fine. If you want to write me domestic gen stuff, I’ll be very happy. If you want to pen a filthy, sprawling pornographic saga with long passages celebrating someone’s butt, I will also be very happy. I’m keen on plot, so please include a bit. Because it’s Yuletide and the characters in these fandoms are all a bit stupid sometimes and seem to relish my tears, please avoid crushing my spirit further with any irredeemable loss or major character death (unless it’s horror, an entirely different story).

A Place of Greater Safety – Hilary Mantel (Camille Desmoulins/Danton and/or Camille Desmoulins/Lucille Desmoulins or Camille Desmoulins/Annette Duplessis, Maximilien Robespierre)

I am genuinely grateful to this book for humanizing the revolutionary leaders I’d long dismissed as villains and for giving me Camille, the bisexual, stuttering conscience of the Terror and love of my life. I mean it: I love how he stood on a table (or a chair) and made a speech that started the Revolution, how he stuttered except for when he got really carried away on a tide of strong emotions, how he would be outrageously provocative and couldn’t help himself one bit, how he married a girl to get at her mother, how he turned against the cause when he couldn’t live with it anymore, how he had sex with everybody all the time. I’m also especially fond of how everyone treats him like he’s a monster when he is anything but. In particular, the relationship between him and Danton fascinates me. Such easy friends and always the hint of much more. Danton protects him, calms him down, strokes his hair. It’s a lot and I live for it. Camille and Lucille surprising themselves a bit by falling in love. Camille and Annette. Camille and Annette. Oh god, Camille and Annette. I think I’ve just realized that this is the ship of my heart. AU in which Lucille doesn’t walk into the room? I’ve included Max because he was around, but I’m still a bit angry with him after all this time. His flustered reactions to Camille’s shenanigans are priceless. The Camille/Danton/Lucille dynamic is one way to go. Please no Annette/Lucille funny business.

As Meat Loves Salt – Maria McCann (Jacob Cullen/Christopher Ferris, Rebecca)

Now, these two…I want the good times between them and only the good times. The good times were so good. Remember? Cheapside and the candlelit house? Gently deceiving Aunt and having to ruffle up the sheets before Becs noticed that one of the beds had stayed empty overnight? THE MAP? Even the guarded love of New Jerusalem is admissible (until it isn’t anymore). I sort of feel like fluff isn’t really possible because of what both of them (but come on, mainly Jacob) are like, so let’s call them the relatively good times. I am in complete denial about anything else. Rebecca got nommed for her sass. She doesn’t need to be involved in any intimate activities; she can just be around, watchful and occasionally daring.

Nathan Barley (Dan Ashcroft/Jones)

All I ask is that the characters be recognizable as themselves and not just familiar names in a soap opera. Remember, this show was a comedy so unrelenting gloom seems a bit out of place. Can be before, during or after the show. Can also be before, during or after they realize that they are in love.

Nicola Samorì – Works* (VOLTANY 6 17, VOLTANY False Forest)

These two paintings leave me a bit baffled and uncomfortable and excited because I know they have about a thousand stories each in them. I won’t limit you with any strictures beyond imploring you to tell me what is going on here. They both seem like fables suspended in time. They haunt me. Write about one or the other or both. Have at it.

VOLTANY 6 17:

VOLTANY False Forest:

*For some reason, Yuletide has this listed as “Samorì Nicola – Works” and I only noticed after vetting closed. Oh well.

Okay, that's it.
Sorry I've gone on and on like that. Feel free to get in touch if you like. Thanks again and happy Yuletide!

The Young Ones

You don’t get the chance to mourn TV shows properly most of the time; they get cancelled before they come back from hiatus and you're too busy with summer to notice or they end without anyone - not you, not the people in them - realizing that they won't get the chance to make more.

So when at 15 I realized that I had run out of The Young Ones (and first understood the sweet torture of the six-episode British series structure), I didn't grieve. I'm sure I probably felt some disappointment that they hadn't done a third series, but more than that I was hungry, ravenous, to follow all the branches of influence that sprouted from that one abbreviated, massive show.Emotions + nostalgiaCollapse )

Over it

I had to go to yet another wedding-related event yesterday, the third now to do with A's brother and his girlfriend, and with the promise of more to come, apparently as early as next weekend. Let's just disregard my bafflement at all these now requisite pre-pre-pre-marriage events that and why they always degenerate into extended cooing sessions over pastels and slideshows and toddlers and resort holidays. It happened again.Collapse )

Rare Ship Exchange

Dear kind person,

Thank you for signing up for this exchange and thank you for indulging me in my ships!

I don't think I'm particularly difficult when it comes to fic specifics, but here are the things I definitely don't like:

  • mpreg

  • rape/non-con (I'm okay with some initial reluctance, but it's a very fine line. No problem with references to, but no descriptions of rape.)

  • underage (16 where I live, but doesn't really apply to any of my requests)

Otherwise, have at it - I'm sure I will be pleased with anything you write. And go ahead if you want to write smut, especially really good smut - I'll be a happy camper.

As to fandom/ship specifics, here goes:

As Meat Loves Salt - Maria McCann: Jacob Cullen/Christopher Ferris
The fucked up loves of my life. I want the good times between them and only the good times. The good time were so good. Remember? I am in complete denial about anything else. Feel free to throw Rebecca in there - I adore her aggressive sass.

Nathan Barley: Dan Ashcroft/Jones
All I ask is that the characters be recognizable as themselves and not just familiar names in a soap opera. Can be before, after, during the show - even AU. (Oh, historical Nathan Barley AU...I just got excited.)

Sword at Sunset - Rosemary Sutcliff: Gault/Levin, Artos/Bedwyr, Bedwyr/Guenhumara
I love all of these characters in almost any combination. Don't be intimidated and worry too much about emulating Sutcliff's beautiful, dense style though; I'm interested in story, so if you have an idea, go for it.

Bioshock Infinite: Robert Lutece/Rosalind Lutece
I am fascinated by these two, from their constant clipped bickering to the ambiguity of their relationship. I am not at all bothered by the incestuous implications of them getting together: smut welcome.

Okay, that's it! Thank you for whatever you come up with - I know I will be very pleased :)

yuletide reveals + acquisitions

I wrote two treats this year for yuletide: Eighteen Hundred and Froze to Death for deepdarkwaters and Broken Lovelorn on Your Rocks for sasha_b. I say 'this year', but really it's the first time I've done yuletide, and also the first time I've written fan fic in general. I mean, I write fairly often, but never to prompts or specifically in the hopes of making someone happy. Eighteen Hundred and Froze to Death in particular made me quite apprehensive, as it was based on a book I had *just* finished, I had very little time to put it together, and I have never tried to write anything like paranormal before. And the lack of rules was daunting; I found myself thinking, "Wait, I can write anything?" and shutting down a bit as a result. That really is quite pathetic. Apparently, I need boundaries and structure like a toddler...

But everyone was pleased in the end. In fact, the response to my treats was better than best-case scenario: I took more than a few moments to bask in my comments...(mine, all MINE!) The amount of support and cheerleading I have benefitted from in the last few days is so much more than I could have possibly expected. In all honesty, I am moved. Slightly apprehensive about reveals, but who knows why or what that means; I gave up on trying to trace back my anxieties years ago. Really looking forward to doing it all over again next year and signing up in time to get a story of my own.

Christmas outcomes

So Christmas was Christmas, complete with presents and tense family gatherings and all of the good (British) TV like the Yonderland finale, Big Fat Quiz, IT Crowd documentary and 2013 Wipe. Watching Death at Pemberley with K tomorrow because Matthew Rhys (he of the threeway with Beau Brummel as Byron, like I'm ever going to get over that).

My cousin came out in an email to her mother, which everyone insisted they had really no problem with, no sir, none at all, but then expressed varying degrees of disappointment over, from "not delighted" to "sad" and "felt like crying". Hmmm. I got yelled at for pointing out that particular contradiction in terms because DON'T I KNOW THAT EVERYONE IS FINE WITH IT AND THEY JUST WANT HER TO BE HAPPY?! Maybe you shouldn't mourn like she's a bit dead then. Worse was said, but it's honestly too embarrassing to write down even if this is anonymous(ish).

In parting, this is what I want to be when I grow up. This lady is nailing EVERYTHING.
